If you, like me, love matcha frappuccinos but dislike the price of buying them at a national coffee chain (or the amount of sugar–wow!), this recipe is for you. In less than five minutes, you can be sipping on a delicious matcha frappe made in your own blender!
In your blender, combine water, milk, matcha, sugar (or other sweetener, if using), vanilla, and xanthan gum. The xanthan gum is optional, but it makes a world of difference in keeping the frappucino from separating and getting clumpy. For a little more than the price of a single Starbucks Frappuccino, you can buy a bag of xanthan gum. A tiny 1/8 teaspoon makes it so much more sippable and closer to “the real thing.” I also hear that xanthan gum helps in gluten free baking, but I have very little experience in the GF world.
Also, you can use whatever kind of milk you prefer. For myself, I like to use whole milk, but my husband prefers plain almond milk. Depending on the kind of milk you use, you may want to add to (or cut back on) the amount of sweetener that you add. Speaking of sweetener, if you want it to taste more like Starbucks, you’ll need to double up (or triple up) on the amount of sweetener you add. If you have vanilla syrup, you can use that and omit the sugar and vanilla extract.
After that’s all blended, add in about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of ice. For me, that’s about 10 to 12 ice cubes. Blend until smooth, and then serve with a straw. If you’re feeling extra fancy, top with a little whipped cream 😉 Knowing all the money you saved by making it at home makes it taste that much better.
