My husband likes to stop and visit with people. Here recently, he stopped by a vineyard a little less than 15 miles from us. Before they planted a vineyard, they planted a whole bunch of apple trees. And the generous old man who started the vineyard thought it would be fun to take my husband and son out to the orchard to pick a few apples. Therefore, they ended up with a grocery sack FULL of apples!
This is my Grandma Erma’s recipe, and I love it so. Someday when my kids are old enough to bake pies, I will be teaching them how to make this recipe!
If you want to, pare the apples. Growing up, I don’t ever recall having an apple pie that didn’t have the peels still on. Really, there is no reason other than personal preference to peel the apples. Slice the apples to your liking, though we prefer them thinly. I would recommend the slices be no thicker than 1/4″ thick.
You will need one 9″ unbaked pie crust, which is one-half of my favorite recipe.
In a bowl, mix together the flour and sugar. Cut in the butter until crumbly.
Fill the pie crust generously with apple slices.
In another bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the apples in the crust. Alternatively, you can stir the sugar and cinnamon in with the apples before filling the crust. But, this is how I remember my mom making this pie, so that’s how I do it!
Sprinkle the crumbs over apples in crust. Bake in a preheated oven for about 40 minutes, until the crumb topping turns a light golden brown.
Cool before slicing and serving. I highly recommend serving this pie slightly warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Looks good! Could you just as easily use two 9″ pie crusts, instead of the crumb topping? Trying to cut down on sugar for this year’s Thanksgiving desserts 🙂
Yes! You could definitely do a top crust instead. If you brush it with a little beaten egg and sprinkle a little coarse sugar on top, it will glisten and look special 🙂
Awesome! Thank you!
