Simple Meat Lasagna

My “go to” recipe when it comes to lasagna is of the spinach variety.  I wanted to try something a little bit different, so I decided to make a meat lasagna.  I think the results were delicious!

Here’s what you need:

Start by sauteing the onion and garlic.  I recommend chopping the onion into a little smaller pieces than what I did.  They were just a little too big for my taste.  I cooked these for a few minutes in a dry pan before adding the meat.

Mix together the egg and ricotta cheese.

Cook the lasagna noodles as directed on the package.

For the sauce, you can use homemade or store bought.  Consider this, however, the quality and taste of the sauce will make a big difference in the lasagna.

As for the meat, if you use ground beef, you may want to up the spices to add some more flavor.  Sausage, however, already has a lot of spices and will give lots of flavor.

Start layering the ingredients.  Begin with sauce, then noodles, then meat, then cheeses.  Repeat until the dish is filled, ending with sauce, and topping with Parmesan.

Bake until bubbly and delicious!

1 pound ground meat (beef, pork, sausage, etc)
1/2 medium onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 1/2 – 2 cups meatless spaghetti/marinara sauce
1 15 oz container ricotta cheese
1 egg
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 – 1/2 cups Parmesan cheese
Lasagna noodles

Brown meat with onion and garlic.  Drain fat and set aside.  Mix together egg and ricotta.  Cook noodles according to package.  Spread a small amount of sauce in the bottom of an 8″x8″ square pan.  Layer noodles, half meat, half ricotta, half mozzarella, then sauce.  Repeat.  Top with noodles, then more sauce and a little Parmesan.  Bake, covered, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.  Uncover and bake another 15 minutes.  Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Serves 6.
