Homemade pizza sauce is easier to make than I thought! One time, I was out of it with no time to go to the store, so I grabbed some tomato sauce and started experimenting. I must say that this sauce is so much more flavorful than the sauce you buy in a store. And you can control the amount of the spices to your liking!
In about 30 minutes or so, you can have pizza sauce at the ready, for using to top a pizza, or to use for dipping with crispy ravioli!
Here is what you need… Tomato sauce, some spices, and salt & pepper. You might need a little bit of sugar, depending on the acidity of your tomatoes. I am using home-canned tomatoes that have a little added lemon juice, so I always need to add some sugar. For a quart of tomatoes, I usually add about a tablespoon of white sugar.
Pour all of the ingredients into a saucepan over medium-high heat.
Bring that to a boil, and then turn down the heat to let it simmer.
Simmer as long as you like, but at least until it’s reduced and thickened.
All in all, I think the sauce usually reduces by about 1/3 to 1/2 to get to the consistency that we like it. Let it get a little thicker if you’re going to use it as a dip for mozzarella sticks or something like that. But for pizza, it’s ready to go!
